Alfonso Fusco on display, stories of Amalfi in the 1950s and 1960s

A project realized by the Municipal Administration of Amalfi - led by Mayor Daniele Milano - with the collaboration of the Fusco family. The initiative is promoted by the Department of Culture - headed by Enza Cobalto - curated by Puracultura and sponsored by the Center for Amalfi Culture and History.

Alfonso Fusco, from Amalfi, born in 1938 and who died a few years ago, worked as a photographer at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s: in his archives unearthed by his family, thousands of negatives emerge that testify to the changes taking place in that precise period from the end of World War II to the beginning of the Amalfi "dolce vita."

Fusco aims his lens and captures, in a kind of photographic neorealism, everything that happened in Amalfi in those years: shots of everyday life - weddings, public events, election campaigns - but also special events, such as the splendid parties with the dancers of the Africana or the arrival of Jacqueline Kennedy in the Divina.

Accompanying the 96-image photo exhibition, which will open on Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 6 p.m., will be the presentation of the volume "Amalfi in the 1950s and 1960s - Alfonso Fusco, photographer," edited by journalist Claudia Bonasi, with an introduction by anthropologist Prof. Vincenzo Esposito, who will be present at the event along with Puracultura publisher Antonio Dura.

The 120-page book houses 200 carefully selected shots divided into sections.

The Arsenal, for the duration of the Photographic Exhibition, will host an interactive table (created by the Cesena-based Collettivo Digitale) containing 393 photos of portraits taken by Alfonso Fusco, with which to bring to life an interactive game "Do you (re)know them?" in which all citizens will be called upon to participate, in an attempt to name faces from Amalfi that are unknown today. 480 images taken by the Amalfi photographer will also be projected on a loop.

Opening hours of the exhibition "Amalfi 1950s and 1960s - Alfonso Fusco, photographer": from December 28, 2021 to January 9, 2022 open daily 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. From Jan. 9 to Feb. 28, 2022 open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. or by appointment.

Free admission

"The discovery of the photographic archive of Alfonso Fusco, a witness with his snapshots of the most important events that took place in Amalfi between the 1950s and 1960s, and the project to create a catalog and an exhibition hosted in the Arsenal of the Republic, are among the most interesting events of this year," - points out the mayor of Amalfi, Daniele Milano - "The recovery of the town's memory is achieved through the possibility of naming dozens and dozens of faces, protagonists of the daily life of our Community.
